Never say never.

"Don't selfpublish! You are throwing your work away! You might as well burn the book." These are but a few of the negative things I have been told by the so called experts. Certain authors and professors alike seem to feel like this is the worst decision you can make as a writer. I have actually had more than three lectures from various published author/ professors on the evils of selfpublishing while attending school. For a while I was a beliver. I thought it was giving up. Admitting defeat. Saying I am not good enough for the big leagues. I don't feel that way anymore.

Things change. More and more book stores disappear everyday and more and more avenues appear for authors to produce ebooks that look just as professional as what the big five produce. Smashwords, Wattpad, Createspace, etc. can all help you create a polished looking product. So why shouldn't I try it? Why is it evil?

If I shoudn't do this what should I do? Keep sending manuscripts off to thirty different indie publishes? Wait for an email that may never come? Keep submitting to contests and fiction websites that are so overwelmed with submissions they can't even send a rejection letter? Yes! That is exactly what I should do. Thats how the game is played. BUT it is nice to know there are other options out there.

So why not selfpublish? Every writer I know has that folder or notebook full of stories sitting collecting dust. Why not get them out there?

I thought it would be impossible to do. I was told that it was way too much work and I would be better off paying someone else to do it. Not at all true. It did take a couple of hours and three tries, but I cannot even begin to tell you how satisfing the whole experence has been. I'm not going to sit here and tell you this is how I am going to release all my work, because I'm not. Just like every other writer who picked up a pen to try to tell a story, I dream about making it big and writing the next bestseller. I dream of sitting back and watching the movie deals and TV deals come pouring in. I am not ready to give up on that. Self publishing gives me an outlet to get my stories out there and maybe even have someone read them. Everybody has to start somewhere, better to start here than never start at all.
